Deciding Where to Search: True, the Internet does provide a wide array of information at the touch of your fingertips. However, it may not be the best information for your particular assignment. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation spot, the Internet is a great place to do research. However, if you need academic research, the Internet is usually not the best place to start. The materials in the TCC Libraries are chosen for the classes taught at each campus. In addition, libraries organize information in ways that the Internet does not. This results in reliable and relevant information being located more easily. The Internet does not include all information ever published. Libraries preserve and provide access to materials that predate the Internet. When a book is published, it goes through an editorial process to be published. Accuracy of facts is checked and there is an evaluation process which the work must endure to be published. This is not the case on the Internet, where anyone can publish anything. You must use caution when using the Internet for academic purposes. Remember that the information can often be located quicker and easier in the library or in the online databases than by scrolling through page after page of Internet search engine results. Therefore, by using the library's specialized materials, you will not lose valuable time sorting through thousands of Internet sites. Finally, it is important to realize that there are qualified staff at the library who can guide you in your research, whether the information is in a book at the library, in the databases, or on the Internet. The library is not just providing you the book, but the expertise and experience of professionals. |
